February 15-19

Writing
This week the class is getting a big surprise! Pop Rocks! We will describe how the pop rocks smell, taste, sound, and feel using our best sensory language. We will also use similes to describe how the pop rocks exploded. But don't tell your child, it's a surprise!

Reading
This is our last week in reading with making inferences and draw conclusions.  Students have had to become good investigators about how to understand an author's clues to help them infer what is happening in a story. We will be using our prior knowledge to make inferences with both fiction and nonfiction text.

Math
Attention! Forward march! Left, left, left right left. This week we are going through Multi-Step Problem Boot Camp! Soldiers will be put into teams and work through different missions, including basic training and an obstacle course. Soldiers will decide if a problem requires multiple operations in order to solve and then work through the steps to figure out an answer. It’s sure to be a grueling, exhausting experience but that’s the price you have to pay to be a true Word Problem Soldier!

Science and Social Studies:
This week we will be learning about the water cycle.  We will discuss all the stages that water goes through in its continuous cycle and learn the names of each phase. Condensation, evaporation and precipitation will all be discussed. At the end of the week each child will create their own water cycle comic strip to illustrate their learning.

Research question of the week: What is a geode?
