March 28-April 1st

A Note From Our Wonderful Music Teachers, Mr. Touchet and Mrs. Schuler
Just a reminder that the 2nd grade PTA performance is Tuesday, April 5. The PTA meeting will start at 6:30 and the performance will start right after that.

We would like to have the students in the cafeteria annex between 6:15 and 6:30 to prepare for the performance.

Attire will be school appropriate clothing.

We look forward to seeing everyone there for what will be a fun time and great performance.
Writing
This week in writing, we will be creating our own fables!  We will review different themes and moral lessons that we have seen in the folktales, fables, myths, and legends we have been reading in class, and use those great examples to inspire our own stories.

Reading
This week in reading we are continuing our unit of theme and genre. Students will analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about theme and genre in different stories.  We will identify moral lessons as themes in well-known fables, legends, myths, or stories.

Math
We working on division this week. After learning about multiplication, we will start to figure out how division is the opposite of multiplication. We will practice taking a collection of things and dividing them into equal groups. We will work on word problems and play some games.

iXL has some great activities for fact practice, but doesn’t have the visuals that we will be using in class. Second graders are not required to memorize their multiplication or division facts, but memorization is a great thing to start working on if your child is ready.

Science and Social Studies:
Thank you all so much for sending in supplies for our science ecosystem unit.  We are currently learning about plants and then we will be discussing animals and then animal habitats.  The children will have an opportunity to pick and area of interest and go into a more indepth study of that ecosystem as we begin our unit.  Students will be able to work with different teachers starting next week on Fridays for this enrichment activity.  We are all looking forward to learning about ecosystems and sharing what we learn with our families.

Writing
This week in writing, we will be learning and reviewing ways in which writers get ideas and organize their thoughts. We will use graphic organizers and brainstorming techniques such as writing lists and making webs to help us develop real and imagined stories with strong beginnings, middles, and ends.

Reading
This week in reading we are beginning a new unit of theme and genre. Students will analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about theme and genre in different stories.  We will identify moral lessons as themes in well-known fables, legends, myths, or stories.

Please remember to read 100 minutes a week at home.  If students read 20 minutes at least 5 days a week, they will reach this goal.  Challenge your child to use more than one strategy they’ve learned in class during their at home reading time.

Math
This week we are starting to learn about multiplication. Second graders are not required to memorize their facts, we are learning about how to put items into equal groups and skip count them to find an answer. We will make make many models to practice this skill, including a mushroom with spots and a sticker chart. We will learn about arrays and how to read them. Here are some iXL skills to practice:

Writing
Our students have been working very hard and creating amazing poems! This week we will be publishing our poems and sharing them with the class. We will also be practicing addressing different writing prompts.

Reading
This is our last week with our unit on poetry and sensory language. Students have had fun making inferences and drawing conclusions about the structure and elements of poetry. They’ve learned about how rhyme, rhythm, and repetition interact to create images in poetry.  They’ve been introduced to new poems and even written some of their own.  This week, we will read more poems and visualize the images and think  about the author’s heart and message.  Students will analyze poems and discuss how poets sometimes use strategies to create their writing.

Math
We are continuing 4 digit place value this week by practicing all the different forms numbers can take: block form, expanded form, and word form. We will also practice adding and subtracting 10 and 100 to 4 digit numbers. We will wrap up everything with an assessment and spend the rest of the week reviewing different second grade math skills with some spring-themed stations!

Support our classroom learning by having your child complete these in IXL:
