Wow, what a wonderful first day! I know this is going to be a fantastic year of learning.
Here are some helpful reminders to help everyone transition into second grade:
- Please have your child wait in the cafeteria if he/she arrives at
school before 7:35 AM. Students will be dismissed at 7:35 to their classrooms.
It’s important that your child gets to school on time so that he/she does not
miss out on important learning and instruction.
- After the first week, please say your goodbyes at the door so that
your child can begin their day independently and confidently.
- Breakfast is free for all students the first week of school.
- Free/reduced lunch applications are due on Oct. 7. Families must
reapply each school year.
- In order to give your child and all the students in our classroom
the excellent learning climate they deserve, we will be establishing a mission
statement, classroom rules, and consequences. After we have worked together to
establish these guidelines, students will receive a copy of each to put in
their agendas. Due to our growing second grade population, we do not currently
have enough agendas for each student. Extra
agendas have been ordered. This
week we will be sending a Communication Log sheet home for parent signatures
and recorded reading minutes. This year we really begin to encourage
students to take accountability for their behavior. These agendas help the
students become more organized and monitor their good and sometimes poor
choices.
- Your child is responsible for 20 minutes of independent reading
each night. Parents must enter their reading minutes into their Agenda/
Communication Log.
- Snack will be in the afternoon due to having an early lunch time
this year. Please be sure to send a snack that follows the district’s nutrition
policy.
- Students can bring water bottles to school if they have a cap or
straw attached at all times. Water bottles need to be taken home on a daily
basis to be cleaned out or they will not be reused.
- Please label all
backpacks, lunch boxes, and jackets with your child’s first and last name. Then
lost item can be returned to their owner.
- It’s important that your child and I know how he/she will be
getting home each day. If you need to make a transportation change, please make
sure you call the front office at 512-464-5500, as they can relay the change to
me immediately before the end of the day.
- Every Tuesday afternoon, your child will bring home a “Tuesday”
folder containing work from the previous week. Some of the papers may be marked
with a GP (Guided Practice.) This indicates that it was a teacher-directed
practice done in class together. Other papers will be checked for mastery, and
marked with an M or NM, for mastery or non-mastery. Mastery for RRISD in second
grade is 70% or higher. Please take time to look over your child’s papers with
him/her to see what was learned the previous week. Folders should be signed and
returned on Wednesday.
- If you are interested in volunteering for field trips or other
school activities, please take time to fill out the district’s background check
form located at the bottom of the Caraway home page.
- We are very excited to celebrate your child’s birthday. However,
we cannot celebrate with food items. If
you wish for your child to bring in a treat, then goodie bags with non-food
items are a great option.
- Each week I will be updating the class blog and sending it out to parents through email. Please check the blog for important information and upcoming events
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child, please
do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
