Reading and Writing

We will wrap up the year in writing by writing a letter to the first graders.  We’ll tell them about all of the things we’ve learned and done this year.  The third grade teachers will also get a letter from us because we want to tell them what we are expecting for next year.

This week in math we are continuing our review of second grade skills to make sure everyone is prepared to go to 3rd! We will be sending home a green booklet titled “I’m getting ready for 3rd grade,!” and it is a great review of both reading and math skills. If your child works on this booklet throughout the summer and brings it back completed to Meet the Teacher in August, I will have a special surprise for them!

Science/Social Studies

Our last week of Social Studies will be changes in transportation, communication and recreation.  We’ll discuss how all of these evolved over time.  Students will put various forms of transportation, communication and recreation in order from past to present. Students will use their creativity to predict the next big thing in transportation, communication and recreation.

Reading and Writing

We have been working hard on our Readers’ Theatre and can’t wait to perform for an audience! This week we’ll continue to practice our dramas with our groups and draw/color our backdrops. This is a great way for students to practice collaborating and cooperating in a group setting, and they are doing an excellent job. Parents- Don’t forget to check the Tuesday folder this week for your official invite to our class’s Readers’ Theatre!

We will continue The Leader in Me, 7 Habits this week by creating a booklet with examples from this year.  I am proud of how well our class is using these habits at school and at home every day.  

Each day this week, students will work in their Reading A-Z books. This is a great book to practice skills such as synonyms, antonyms, silent letters, blends and digraphs, verbs, etc.

We will also work on a “time capsule” this week.  We’ll have pages inside that reflect on this year and predict the future!  These will come home and can be saved to re-open in 5th grade.  We’ll also kick off each day with some brain teasers.

It’s down to the wire and we want to make sure everyone is ready for third grade! This week we will be reviewing essential skills like place value, 3 digit subtraction, problem solving, telling time, and measurement.   

Science/Social Studies

This week in Social Studies we will discuss what a factory is and why is it important.  We’ll see how crayons, cheese and baseball bats are made in factories.  Students will discuss flowcharts and learn how the order is important and how a product is made more efficiently.  Students will discuss money, jobs and income and how they can save money and how they spend money. We’ll have fun getting with partners and creating a pretend business.  We’ll investigate how a product can go from natural resource to a finished product such as sheep wool to yarn.  At the end of the week, we will move onto community changes and discuss what it would’ve been like to live 100 years ago.  We will compare our lives to children from 100 years ago and the changes that have happened throughout the years.

Reading and Writing

This week students will understand a story in a book versus a story on stage.  We’ll start the week off by analyzing and discussing all the elements in a drama script. Then, students will be separated into groups, given a part, and are expected to practice their drama together! They’ll also be making their very own backdrop for their play. Next week, we’ll present all our hard work and entertain our classmates and parents with our wonderful acting skills!

We will practice our words throughout the week and check for understanding on Friday.  This will be our last week for spelling this year.  

Math

We are wrapping up multiplication and division this week. On Monday we will review everything we've learned and then assess on Tuesday. We want to be rock solid on our math facts before 3rd grade so we will be playing several review games the rest of the week.

We will be playing a fun game called “Swat the Fact” and will be using fly swatters. If you could let us borrow a fly swatter for the day, that would be greatly appreciated! Please make sure your name is on it so I can return it at the end of the week.   

Science/Social Studies

This week we are finishing our animal and plant unit with a review and assessment.  Then we will move into our last Social Studies unit on Economics.  We’ll discuss wants and needs and distinguish between them.  Goods and services will be introduced as we learn about the different jobs that people have in our community.  Students will discuss the role of producers and consumers in our community, state and world.

Tuesday Homework:  Find something made in another country and bring it back in the zip-lock bag that will be in the Tuesday folder.

Reading and Writing

Mother’s Day is right around the corner! This week students are writing all about their moms and how much they mean to them. We’ll start off the week brainstorming reasons why we appreciate our mom so much. By Friday, students will have a well written paragraph to give to their mom on their special day.

While reading a selection of Mother’s Day books, we will continue to work on our Mother’s Day projects.

Each day this week, students will work in their A-Z books. This is a great book to practice skills such as synonyms, antonyms, silent letters, blends and digraphs, verbs, etc.

During the next few weeks we’ll assess the reading progress on each child.  This assessment is done at the beginning of the year and again at the end of the year.  It is always so exciting to see their growth!

Math

We have a few more days of multiplication this week. We will read lots of word problems and practice forming number sentences from the given information. We are also starting division later in the week. If you have 5 rubber bands and 25 goldfish crackers, how many will go in each group? If you have 12 cookies and 3 friends, how many cookies will each friend get? Through The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins and other activities, we will have plenty of ways to practice our new division skills.

Science

This week in science students will compare and give examples of the ways living organisms depend on each other and on their environment.  We’ll discuss how plants and animals depend on each other in many ways.  We’ll learn how food chains show the flow of energy from one organism to another.  A focus will be on what types of food chains can be found in different habitats.
