March 21-25


Writing
This week in writing, we will be learning and reviewing ways in which writers get ideas and organize their thoughts. We will use graphic organizers and brainstorming techniques such as writing lists and making webs to help us develop real and imagined stories with strong beginnings, middles, and ends.

Reading
This week in reading we are beginning a new unit of theme and genre. Students will analyze, make inferences and draw conclusions about theme and genre in different stories.  We will identify moral lessons as themes in well-known fables, legends, myths, or stories.  

Please remember to read 100 minutes a week at home.  If students read 20 minutes at least 5 days a week, they will reach this goal.  Challenge your child to use more than one strategy they’ve learned in class during their at home reading time.

Math
This week we are starting to learn about multiplication. Second graders are not required to memorize their facts, we are learning about how to put items into equal groups and skip count them to find an answer. We will make make many models to practice this skill, including a mushroom with spots and a sticker chart. We will learn about arrays and how to read them. Here are some iXL skills to practice:





Science and Social Studies:
We will be having a lot of fun in our up-coming ecosystem PBL unit starting after Spring Break. We need a few items to help make our activities a success. Some of these items you may have sitting around your house. Thanks for donating if you can. We need items by Monday, March 21st.
-          Knee high panty hose (one for each child)
-          A small bag of potting soil
-          A small bag of grass seed
-          Googly eyes
-          Empty, rinsed soda cans (one for every child)
-          2 dozen Styrofoam cups
-          Plain white index cards (3 x 5 size)
-          Fabric scraps, any color or pattern
-          Wooden skewers
